Obesity has become one of the leading causes of death, especially in the United States. It increases the risk of health problems such as heart failure, hypertension, and diabetes which may cause heart-attack or stroke. It can also cause aneurysms and sleep apnea. It has become a serious public health issue in the U.S.
Obesity is perceived as less attractive by society. Adults with excessive weight may experience social stigmatization from the workforce. They are less likely to be hired for a job, especially one where physical assertion is required. Or, while on the job, an obese person with the same skills and experience as a smaller-sized counterpart might be overlooked for promotion in favor of the smaller person. A child or adolescence that is overweight may experience social issues such as being picked on by bullies or shunned by their peers.
Now, there is nothing wrong with being fat. Many overweight people are content with the way that they look and even feel proud of their large size. Some overweight people are surprisingly healthy despite their large size. But, the fact remains. People are dying from a health problem that is preventable with diet and exercise.
